NESO Open Balancing Platform

OBP was developed to modernise the UK’s energy balancing mechanism and support the delivery of net-zero. During my time on the project, I led the creation of the Design System and all components that comprise the front-end graphical user interface of the system.

Design System

User Interface

Web app (React js)

This project went live at the end of 2023.

  • 90% reduction in user input
  • 283% increase in the average dispatch volume of batteries
  • 37,400 metric tons of CO2 saved since OBP launched

The previous system had been devised in the 1990s

A user-centric approach was driven by 100+ hours of user engagement and the application of IBM Design Thinking

I refined the interface over several iterations, using Figma prototypes for user trials to validate each stage

All data visualisations were designed to meet WCAG AA standards, ensuring accessibility for the data-heavy interface

To ensure consistency and facilitate future scaling, I established a comprehensive Design System with clear guidelines

This early-stage video was produced to allow for easier communication of key concepts to the wider team
